Vocab/ Sentences

1. Toughen- To make somebody/something tough/ He made metal hot and stroke repeatedly to toughen the metal.

2. Stance- a) a way of standing or being placed b) intellectual or emotional attitude/ My stance on an educational system is affirmative.

3. Criticize- to say what is bad or wrong with sb/sth / I criticized the poem.

4. Unprecedented- never having happened or existed before. / The accident is unprecedented.

5. reconciliation- to find a way of dealing with two ideas, situations, statements, etc that seem to be opposite to each other/ they need a reconciliation.

6. demilitarization- to do away with the military organization or potential of/ Two Koreas need demilitarization.

7. amid- in the middle of; among/ I live in a house amid the trees.

8. Headquarter- to place in headquarters, to make one's headquarters/ militia headquartered there.

9. virtue- conformity to a standard of right, a particular moral excellence/ Virtue is the important.

10. Manipulate- to influence sb so that he/she does or thinks what you want/ I know
how to manipulate the instrument.

11. impeachment- a: to bring an accusation against b: to charge with a crime or misdemeanor/ We impeached the president for the scandal.

12. Counterpart- one of two corresponding copies of a legal instrument; a thing that fits another perfectly/ The paper is a counterpart.

13. Dogged- refusing to give up even when sth is difficult. I was impressed by his dogged determination to succeed.

14. whip- to strike with a slender lithe implement (as a lash or rod) especially as a punishment/ I whip a cow on.

15. ethics- the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation/ I always keep business ethics.

16. temper- aarchaic: a suitable proportion or balance of qualities; a characteristic cast of mind or state of feeling/ He has a calm temper.

17. indictment- the action or the legal process of indicting / He was under indictment for fraud.

18. legitimacy- the quality or state of being legitimate/ He claimed the legitimacy.

19. Pragmatic- dealing with problems in a practical way rather than by following idea or principles/ The pencil is very pragmatic.

20. Ideological- relating to or concerned with ideas/ His thesis is ideological with Einstein’s ideas.

21. Engage- to offer (as one's word) as security for a debt or cause; B) To give work to sb/ He is engaged in foreign trade.

22. concession- something that you agree to do in order to en an argument/ Employers have been forced to make concessions to the union.

23. garner- a: to gather into storage b: to deposit as if in a granary
24. Viable- that can be done; that will be successful/ the new plan is viable.

25. contender- a person who may win a competition/ There are two contenders for the leadership.

26. incompetent- inadequate to or unsuitable for a particular purpose not ; legally qualified ; lacking the qualities needed for effective action/ He is incompetent to teach French.

27. malaise- an indefinite feeling of debility or lack of health often indicative of or accompanying the onset of an illness/ He showed us malaise.

28. Afloat- having enough money to survive; on the surface of the water, not sinking/ The ship is afloat.

29. squelch- a) to fall or stamp on so as to crush, b) to completely suppress/ I squelched the can.

31. treason- the criminal act of causing harm to a country, for example by helping its enemies/ That was high treason.

32. Coddle- to treat with extreme or excessive care or kindness/ I coddle me myself.

37. epidemiology- a branch of medical science that deals with the incidence,
distribution, and control of disease in a population./ I am learning epidemiology in college.

38. harbinger- a person sent ahead to provide lodgings. ; One that presages or
foreshadows what is to come / The bird is the harbinger of spring.

39. rosy- a: of the color rose b: having a pinkish usually healthy-looking complexion./ The clouds are rosy.

40. attribute- to believe that sth was caused or done by sb/sth. - He attributed his success to hard work.

41. Fatal- causing or ending in death; causing trouble or a bad result./ that was a fatal accident.

42. bedlam- 1.obsolete: MADMAN, LUNATIC 2.often capitalized: a lunatic asylum 3.a place, scene, or state of uproar and confusion/ The event was a terrible bedlam.

52. infrastructure- the underlying foundation or basic framework. / I think that the house is the infrastructure of congress.

53. sophisticate- to make complicated or complex. / This act sophisticates children.

54. angst- a feeling of anxiety, apprehension, or insecurity. / I have angst because of the dark.

55. psychologist- a scientist who studies the science of mind and behavior. / He is a psychologist in the college.

56. vendor- one that vends/ He is a vendor who works near a river.

57. subsidiary- a: furnishing aid or support b: of secondary importance. / I need a subsidiary pencil

58. fuzzy- not clear. / Sight was very fuzzy because of fog.

59. Entrepreneur- one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or
enterprise. / An entrepreneur should manage the risk of a business.

60. Massive- forming or consisting of a large mass. / The mountain is very massive.

61. allegation- the act of alleging; an assertion unsupported and by implication regarded as unsupportable / I think that his allegation was true.

62. cynical- adj. having or showing the attitude or temper of a cynic. / He always
says cynical words.

63. eligible- 1.qualified to participate or be chosen; 2.worthy of being chosen. / He is an eligible candidate.
